Between about 7:47 and 7:52 on the evening of June 24, 2026, the National Weather Service logged four hail reports in and around Berthoud: 1.50-inch stones a mile west and a mile north-northwest of town, and 1.75-inch stones (golf-ball size) in town and a mile southeast. Those are the official NOAA Storm Prediction Center reports for that night, filed by the Weather Service office in Boulder. If your roof has not been inspected since the storm, check for damage and review your policy’s reporting deadline.
Where the Storm Hit
Colorado logged 36 hail reports that evening, most of them out on the eastern plains. Across Larimer, Weld and Boulder counties, the four Berthoud reports were the only ones: this was a Berthoud storm. All four fell within about a mile of town, so if you live in or around Berthoud, check for signs of damage and consider a roof inspection. For every other hail day of the 2026 season in Cooper’s area, see Storms of 2026.
What Golf-Ball Hail Does to a Roof
Stones of 1.5 to 1.75 inches bruise asphalt shingles, crack the mat underneath and knock the protective granules loose, often without leaving a hole you can see from the driveway. The damage shows up later, as granule loss and leaks, after the damage has become harder to document. The same hail dents metal vents, flashing, gutters and downspouts. For scale, the Class 4 impact rating that Berthoud now requires on new asphalt roofs is tested by dropping a two-inch steel ball on the shingle.
What to Check From the Ground
You can learn a lot without a ladder: dents in gutters and downspouts; piles of shingle granules at the downspout outlets; dented fins on the air-conditioning unit; torn or pocked window screens; and fresh spatter marks on fences, decks or painted trim. Those signs are a reason to have the roof checked for damage. Do not climb onto the roof to look; a roof-level inspection is safer and far more reliable.
The Clock That Started on June 24
Colorado law does not set a deadline for reporting hail damage; your policy does. Many homeowners policies ask for notice within one year of the storm, which for this storm means around June 24, 2027, and some are shorter. Since a 2024 Colorado Supreme Court ruling, an insurer can deny a late claim only if it shows the delay hurt its investigation, but a claim filed while the damage is fresh is far easier to prove. Write the storm date down now, check the “duties after loss” section of your policy, and read our hail damage guide for how Colorado claims work step by step.
If Your Roof Needs Replacing: Berthoud’s Class 4 Rule
Berthoud requires Class 4 impact-resistant shingles on every asphalt reroof, and it does not allow 3-tab shingles at all, under the town’s 2026 roofing regulations. If the June hail means a new roof, the replacement has to meet that rule, which also tends to earn a discount from many Colorado insurers. Our Berthoud roofing page covers the town’s permit and code requirements.

Berthoud Hail Storm: Your Questions
Was my part of Berthoud hit by hail on June 24, 2026?
The National Weather Service logged four reports between about 7:47 and 7:52 pm: 1.50-inch hail a mile west and a mile north-northwest of town, and 1.75-inch (golf-ball) hail in town and a mile southeast. If you live in or around Berthoud, check for signs of damage and consider a roof inspection.
How do I know if my roof was damaged by the June 24 hail?
Hail of 1.5 to 1.75 inches often bruises asphalt shingles without visible holes. From the ground, look for dented gutters and downspouts, piles of shingle granules at downspout outlets, dented air-conditioner fins and torn window screens. Do not climb onto the roof; a professional roof inspection can confirm whether there is damage.
How long do I have to file a claim for the June 24 storm?
Colorado law does not set one; your policy does. Many policies ask for notice within one year of the storm, which here means around June 24, 2027, and some are shorter. Check the duties-after-loss section of your policy and document the storm date now.
Does a hail inspection cost anything?
No. Cooper Construction inspects from the roof for free, photographs what it finds and explains the damage and repair options. Call (303) 910-0859 or request an estimate online.
